Faculty of Business

Description of project Activities of research and development (R&D) play a vital role not only in promoting national economic growth, but also in enhancing the competitiveness for enterprises. Along with the growing R&D expenditures of modern enterprises, the accounting treatment of R&D costs has also attracted wide attention in academia and industries. In this project, we intend to collect data from the annual financial reports of publicly listed companies in China in recent years. Based on these data, we plan to test empirically the relationship between capitalization of R&D and productivity in Shanghai Stock market. Asset, labor, R&D expenditure, R&D capitalization and industry will be used as the indicators. It is expected that the effects of asset, labor, R&D expenditure on productivity will be significantly positive, whereas the effect of the capitalization of R&D on productivity will be largely positive but it may induce a negative effect due to its quality and earning management.
