Three New Master-degree Programmes from Year 2020-21

Chu Hai College of Higher Education will offer three new Master programmes in this September. They are: Master of Social Sciences in International Business Management for Belt and Road Countries (M.Soc.Sci. in IBM); Master of Social Sciences in International Relations for Belt and Road Countries (M.Soc.Sci in IR), and Master of Arts in Global Communication (M.A. in GC).

The two M.Soc.Sci programmes will be run by the One Belt One Road Research Institute of the College. The M.Soc.Sci. in IBM programme will focus on business learning grounded on both international theory and practices of business, while the M.Sco.Sci. in IR programme is an interdisciplinary programme focusing on the possible changes in international relations between China and the Belt and Road countries.

Each of the M.Soc.Sci programmes comprises 30 credits divided into five compulsory core courses (a total of 15 credits) and five out of 11 elective courses (minimum 15 credits).

Examples of the core courses of the M.Soc.Sci in IBM are: International Business Management – Theory and Practices, and International Marketing. Examples of its elective courses are: Risk Management in International Business Transactions, Comparative Legal Systems, 10 Plus 3 – Economics and Politics of ASEAN and China, Japan and Korea and Trade and Investment in Russia and East European Countries.

Examples of the core courses of the M.Soc.Sci in IR are: Geopolitics and Geostrategy – the New International Relations, and History and Culture of the Belt and Road Countries and Regions. Examples of its elective courses are: A Practitioner’s Guide to International Finance, Politics and Economics of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and Oil Politics, Economy and Society of the Middle East.

In terms of career prospect, graduates of the two M.Soc.Sci programmes will enjoy advantages in local and overseas job markets and in international business ventures. There will be a huge demand for managers and professionals with adequate knowledge and skill background in business practices of China and other countries.

The Master of Arts in Global Communication programme will be run by the Department of Journalism and Communication. It is an interdisciplinary programme focusing on the global aspects of communication in the new media era.

It comprises 27 credits divided into five compulsory core courses (a total of 15 credits) and four out of 10 elective courses (minimum 12 credits). Examples of its core courses are: Applied Research for Global Communication, and CNN Study Tour (Boot camp). Examples of its elective courses are: Strategic Media Management, and Big Data and Communication.

Upon completing the M.A. in GC programme, students will master a critical understanding of advanced communication theories and a practical knowledge of media professional skills, critical evaluation skills with global perspectives, and ability to apply communication theories in practice.;

All the three new programmes can be completed in full-time within one academic year, or in part-time mode within two academic years, with some classes being conducted during weekends. The medium of instruction will be English. In the case of the M.A. in GC programme, it will be supplemented with Chinese for practicum courses.
