The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences aims at exploring the range of knowledge and skills in the areas of languages and literature, culture and history, critical thinking and philosophy, media and communication studies and professional ethics.
The mission of the Faculty is to provide a broad-based education with a specialization to our students, who will be culturally and linguistically competent at the workplace and society with a think global and act local mindset. The Faculty focuses on students’ cultural cultivation as well as the proficient use of language, giving them the confidence and ability to face the challenges of a society where tri-lingualism (Cantonese, Putonghua and English), cultural sensitivities and global awareness are increasingly important.
We are a community of dedicated teachers and professionals to prepare our students in good stead for wide-ranging careers. The Faculty consists of three Departments: Chinese Literature, English, Journalism and Communication, and offers innovative curricula that respond to the needs of society and equip students to become employable graduates and responsible citizens with lifelong learning.
The Department of Chinese Literature aims to foster students with proficient language abilities in creative writing and sound knowledge of classical and modern Chinese literature through in-depth training of ancient and modern classics.
The Department of English offers students to gain a good understanding of the English language education and the culture behind it as well as English for Specific Purpose to meet the demands of different kinds of jobs. Also, students after finishing the first year can choose to go on exchange with our partner institution, the Potsdam University in Germany.
The Department of Journalism and Communication, established since 1968 has nurtured more than 2,500 graduates. Its three programmes (Journalism and Communication, Advertising and Corporate Communication, Communication and Cross-media) provide state-of-the-art training in the above areas. The Department has also been running a summer internship scheme in which students are scheduled to work in large organizations in Hong Kong, Beijing, Taiwan, and Canada.
The Faculty is gaining international recognition through its strong academic links with overseas universities, having established academic cooperation and exchange activities with Peking University, Nanjing University, National Chengchi University, and the University of Potsdam in Germany.
