With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Prof Kazuo IWAMURA, Visiting Professor of the Department of Architecture, in Tokyo on 1 Nov 2024.

Prof IWAMURA was Professor Emeritus of Tokyo City University and founder and CEO of IWAMURA Atelier, Inc. His research and design works focus on integrating environmental considerations with innovative design solutions in Japan, Paris, Athens and Saudi Arabia. He has served as our Visiting Professor in design studios and holistic approach in sustainability courses since 2015. With his kind connection, the College has set up academic collaborations with Tokyo City University, Kyoto Seika University, etc.

Always willing to contribute, he held different important positions in the Architecture discipline, both internationally and nationally. He was former Vice-president of the International Union of Architects (UIA), past Vice-president of the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA), Co-director of the UIA work programme Architecture for a Sustainable Future, Director of World GBC and Director of ARCASIA's Committee on Green & Sustainable Architecture, etc, driving the profession towards sustainability- and resilience-conscious design ideals.

Prof IWAMURA’s life-long commitment to architecture has benefited not only our built environment, but also the next generation of architects. While he is deeply missed by the College and friends, his contribution to sustainability would be glorified by all the students he has inspired and taught.
