Department of Architecture Students Awarded Excellence Award in the 2nd "TJH Cup" Built Heritage Digitalization and Innovative Application Competition

07-06,2026

Under the guidance of Dr. Stephen Au and Dr. Ken To, Shi Jie and Lin Shubei, students of M.Arts in Cultural Heritage from the Department of Architecture, won the Excellence Award in Track 2 "Innovative Application of Digital Methods for Built Heritage" at the 2nd "TJH Cup" Built Heritage Digitalization and Innovative Application Competition with their project titled "Spatiotemporal AR Mirror: AI Digital Guiding System for Lui Seng Chun Historical Building." This achievement showcases the College’s outstanding results in practice-oriented and interdisciplinary teaching.

Using the Lui Seng Chun Tong Lau—a Declared Monument in Hong Kong—as the research scenario, the award-winning project systematically explored the integration path of AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) and AR (Augmented Reality) technologies in the digital activation of historical buildings, proposing and practicing an "AIGC-AR Dual-Engine" methodological framework. Through the design of four interactive AR modules—"Time Machine", "Architectural X-Ray Analysis", "Virtual Character Guiding", and "AR Treasure Hunt Game"—the system effectively stimulates the inherent value and conservation spirit of Lui Seng Chun, achieving a paradigm shift from "passive preservation" to "active digital dissemination."

With the theme "The Future of Tradition," this year's competition focused on the innovative application of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT sensing, digital twins, and smart mapping in the protection and utilization of built heritage. Jointly organized by the New Architecture journal and the UNESCO Chair in Industrial Heritage, and hosted by the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan Skyline Information Technology Co., Ltd., the competition is highly influential within the field of built heritage digitalization. Out of a massive pool of nationwide submissions, 224 teams from 128 undergraduate institutions, 66 vocational colleges, and 30 enterprises and institutions successfully advanced to the finals after a rigorous qualification review. Track 2 evaluated entries based on innovation, practical value, technical difficulty, and completeness of results. The ability of the College's students to stand out in such a highly competitive national arena fully demonstrates their research capabilities, innovative mindset, and interdisciplinary integration skills.

The award not only recognizes the academic and practical excellence of the students, but also reflects the effectiveness of the Department of Architecture in nurturing professional talents with a strong sense of social responsibility, field research capabilities, and an interdisciplinary vision. The College will continue to encourage faculty and students to participate in high-level academic and innovative platforms, deepening exchanges and cooperation with the Greater Bay Area and other regions in education and professional practice.
