Dr. WONG King Keung Peter, BBS, JP

Dr. Wong King Keung, BBS, JP, was born and brought up in Hong Kong.  In 1965, he matriculated from Hong Kong La Salle College with distinctions and admitted to University of Hong Kong on Government scholarship.  In 1968, he graduated from University of Hong Kong in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours.  Then, while on scholarship he followed a M.Sc. research programme in University of Hong Kong specializing in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.  In 1970, he was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship to further his research work and finally he earned his Ph.D degree from Queen’s University, Canada in the field of Civil Engineering in 1972.  Then he returned to Hong Kong and started his career in engineering.

Dr. Wong is one of the three Founders of the University of East Asia (the fore-runner of University of Macau).  During late 1970’s Dr. Wong started to negotiate and planned the University of East Asia.  He was the Council representative in-charge of estate construction and development and supervised the design and construction of the University campus including all related infrastructure.  In early 1980’s, he was involved in the University administration to meet the challenge of economic crisis.  In 1992, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Asia International Open University of Macau and has served as Chairman of Administrative Council.  Currently, he also serves as a Council Member of the University of Hong Kong and Member of the Assembly of the University of Macau and Board Member of various post-secondary educational institutions including Chu Hai College of Higher Education and HKCT Group.

Apart from Dr. Wong’s contributions in educational field, he has also managed companies involved in engineering services, construction, real estate, industrial manufacturing and China trade.  Dr Wong participated in building the White Swan Hotel in Guangzhou in 1980 and founded a printing factory in Shenzhen.  In 1985, he established the Newmark Group of Companies involving in manufacturing, trading and project investments.

At the same time, Dr. Wong is actively involved in public service and served as Member then later Vice Chairman of the Town Planning Board and Hong Kong Arts Development Council as well as Board Member of the Hong Kong Airport Authority.  He currently serves as Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Institution for Promotion of Chinese Culture and the Jao Tsung-I Academy in the cultural field.  He was appointed a Hong Kong Affairs Advisor in 1993; Member of the Preparatory Committee for HKSAR in 1996 and Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference from 1998 to 2018.

Dr. Wong was conferred the Honorary Doctoral Degree of Social Science by the University of Macau in 2010 and also an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Business Administration by the Macau City University in 2016 as well as an Honorary Fellowship by HKU SPACE in the same year.

Dr. Wong was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2000 and awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2001.
