Nippon Paint Asia Young Designer Awards Prize Presentation Ceremony Held at Chu Hai College of Higher Education

The Nippon Paint Asia Young Designer Awards (AYDA) 2019 Prize Presentation Ceremony, organised by our Department of Architecture, was held on Thursday, 27 August 2020, from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm at Lecture Hall 5, Chu Hai College of Higher Education.

Honourable guests who attended the ceremony include Mr Zhou Lan, General Manager of Nippon Paint and members of its public relation team. From the Chu Hai College, Vice-Presidents Prof CK Tang and Ms Brenda Ku, Dean of Faculty of Science & Engineering Prof Lung, teachers and staff of the College also attended the ceremony.

The ceremony commenced with Prof Paul Chu, Head of the Architecture Department, introducing the guests and giving a background of the Nippon Paint AYDA. Mr Zhou Lan then gave an introduction of the competition at its national and international levels. He then, along with our VPs and Faculty Dean, presented the prizes to the awardees, who then shared a few words about the competition.

Sponsored by Nippon Paint, the AYDA 2019 (Hong Kong region) was launched on 31st October 2019. With an aim to nurture students’ design talent, it was the first-ever AYDA design competition in the Architecture discipline held for the Hong Kong region. To enter the competition, students had to submit design proposals under the theme ‘FORWARD - a Sustainable Future’ with their vision of Hong Kong’s urban in future in terms of its environmental, social and cultural sustainability. A total of 28 submissions were received.

The jury for the competition comprised Mr. Franklin Yu (HKIA Vice President, Director of the Green Building Council and Director of Singular Studio Ltd.), Ms Vivien Mak (Director of P&T Architects & Engineers), Mr Alvin Kung (HKIA Young Architects Award 2018 and Chief Architect of Ronald Lu & Partners) and Prof Paul Chu, Head of Architecture Department. The jurors met and reviewed 28 submissions in the presence of Ms Frances Wong (Assistant Manager, Marketing Division of Nippon Paint) and Ms Kirsty Mou (Business Development representative of Nippon Paint) in January 2020. After extensive discussion, they decided to award Gold, Silver, Bronze, Best Colour Choice Award and Best Green Innovation Award to five projects.

Receivers of the Gold, Silver, Bronze, Best Colour Choice and Best Green Innovation Awards are, respectively: Edward TAI Chun Ho (M.Arch Year 2), Rox YU Ka Wai and Benny TIN Chun Kit (B.Sc (Hons) in Architecture Years 3 & 4), Mike YU Tsz Lok and Fabio HEUNG Chun Kit (M.Arch Year 2), Kelly SUN Yuet and Oscar HO Shing Him (B.Sc (Hons) in Architecture Year 3), and Yantel MAK Tsz Ching and Esther YEUNG Ka Ying (B.Sc (Hons) in Architecture Year 4).

As winner of the Gold Award, Edward TAI Chun Ho entered the International AYDA (Architecture discipline) competition in Jun 2020. The overall champion would be sponsored by Nippon Paint to join an international design workshop in Harvard University.
