The New Integrated Work Studies Scheme offered by the Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science (CS) has recently received confirmation from the Hong Kong Council of Academic Accreditation and Vocational Qualification (HKCAAVQ) that the application of adding a new elective course: Integrated Work Studies (IWS), in BSc (Hons) in Computer Science has been approved. IWS is an internship scheme; its objectives are enabling students to:

  1. Gain work experience in the workplace,
  2. Understand the operation of local IT companies,
  3. Acquire the most up-to-date IT knowledge and skills,
  4. Enhance the employability of CS graduates.

According to the course design, students can take IWS as a Level 3 Technical Elective with 6 credits. IWS lasts for 6 months, starting from the end of Year 3 to the first semester of Year 4. During the internship period, students have to report to a designated supervisor from the Department regularly about their daily routine. A final report is needed to be submitted to the Department at the end of the internship. To understand students’ performance, the supervisor does pay visit to the companies involved. All these will be taken into account of the course assessment.

Prof. W.L. Lo, Head of the Department, claims that IWS will be developed as a distinctive feature of BSc (Hons) in Computer Science. With the help of the senior lecturer, Mr. C.H. Kay, a number of companies have been contacted for offering about 30 internship positions. The details of the internship scheme will be announced later.
