Department of Civil Engineering

The accreditation exercise of the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Civil Engineering has been successfully conducted by the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation (HKCAA), which is fully recognized by the Hong Kong Government.

The Department of Civil Engineering provides a comprehensive programme that incorporates professional knowledge and skills as well as practical training for students to pursue a career in various fields of the civil engineering discipline. The programme covers a wide variety of subjects including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, building construction, project management, transportation, materials in structures and construction, and engineering mechanics. Students will be able to become the next generation of civil engineers participating in the design and construction of infrastructures such as bridges, highways, roads, water works, drainage and all aspects related to the civil engineering works.

More than 69 Years of Experience in Offering Civil Engineering Programme

The four-year degree programme in Civil Engineering is one of the first programmes in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The Programme has been offered for 65 years. Our experience in offering civil engineering programme underscores our College's commitment in providing quality education to secondary school leavers to fulfil the needs in the field of civil engineering. The continuous economic development in Hong Kong and the Greater China region needs professionals with in-depth knowledge in civil engineering to contribute in infrastructure construction. The employability and career development of our graduates are optimistic.

In the past 69 years, more than 1,500 students graduated from the Department reflecting the fruit of our success. Our graduates distribute in every corner of the world and have been making their efforts to contribute to the civil engineering industry as well as the prosperity and development of Hong Kong.

Aims

The Programme aims to provide quality education and training in civil engineering for professional practices with the following emphases:

  • To train students to become all-round professional civil engineers who are able to compete effectively in the modern society with rapid technological changes, and to become leading professionals both in the industry, and in academic or government institutions.
  • To educate students to become civil engineers for designing, building and managing building and structural systems, supporting and enhancing economic developments and creating a better quality of life To develop students' engineering problem-solving skills using the latest technologies.
  • To contribute to the developments and maintenance of infrastructural facilities and systems, especially in the local and neighbouring regions.
  • To develop students’ engineering problem-solving skills using the latest technologies.
  • To equip students with knowledge of sustainable developments for the improvement of the living environment and the preservation of the natural environment.
  • To understand ethical issues associated with their profession, and be able to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to the betterment of society.
  • To prepare graduates for future professional career developments or pursuing their postgraduate studies in engineering.

Objectives

The objectives of the Programme are to equip our students with:

  • Acquire knowledge in mathematics and science for applying to civil engineering practices.
  • Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data relevant to civil engineering disciplines.
  • Design a system, component or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints, such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability.
  • Function on multi-disciplinary civil engineering teams.
  • Identify, formulate and solve civil engineering problems.
  • Understand the importance of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  • Communicate and present ideas effectively, including technical writing, oral and presentation skills.
  • Understand the impact of civil engineering solutions in a global and societal context, especially the importance of health, safety and environmental consideration to both workers and the general public.
  • Stay abreast of contemporary issues, and aware of the engineering impacts.
  • Recognize the need for, and to engage in life-long learning.
  • Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for the civil engineering practices.
  • Use the computer/IT tools relevant to the civil engineering disciplines along with an understanding of their processes and limitations.
