Visit to the Marine Regional Headquarters, Hong Kong Police

Our Visit to the Marine Regional Headquarters

On 19 June 2004, our Diploma in Computer Science classes visited the Marine Regional Headquarters at Sai Wan Ho. It is the first time we have ever visited a disciplinary department of HKSAR. We entered the headquarters compound at exactly 9:50 in the morning, and were greeted by Senior Inspector Ng Yan Fa of the Marine Academy. Inspector Ng invited us into the main office building and, after going through several hallways and a staircase where models of Marine boats and crafts are in display, we entered a room where it had exactly the same number of seats as the number of people in our party-28! Inspector Ng proceeded to show us a detailed PowerPoint presentation on how the Hong Kong Marines work. We have learned a great deal of interesting facts that are not taught in regular classrooms. We would not have known, for example, that the fleet of ships belonging to our Hong Kong Marines is the largest among police forces in the world! We have also learned how the Marines protected VIPs, such as President Chiang Zemin and the Queen of England, when they toured Victoria Harbor.

After the presentation, which was thorough and informative, we were led onto a Marine boat docked at the pier of the Marine headquarters. The name of the boat is "Police 3." Again, Inspector Ng showed us around the boat. He then asked several marine officers to take pictures of our entire class on top of "Police 3." We really appreciated the hospitality of our host. By this time, it was close to 12 noon, about half an hour over our allotted time slot. Inspector Ng was gracious enough to accommodate us with another group picture at the Headquarters entrance. At the end of our visit, we had nothing but praise for our Marines and our host, Inspector Ng Yan Fa.

All in all, our visit has been a good experience. We have learned things we would not have learned in school. The visit was fun and educational. We hope the College can arrange more trips like this for us in the future.
