The Architecture and Civil Engineering Departments Visited Macau

Students and staff of the Civil Engineering and Architecture Department visited Macau on the 26th and 27th of February 2005. The tour visited many construction sites in the region and learned many new developments in Macau. The tour was organized by a number of our distinguished alumni who worked in the public and private sector of Macau.

Having noted the remarkable bloom in the building industry of Macau in the recent years and her precious cultural heritages, the departments have arranged a well-balanced tour to blanket a variety of aspects of Macau.

Macau is undergoing probably the most large-scale development in her history which was mainly driven by high-end casinos and hotel and the infrastructure development of the East Asia Game 2005. The study tour had included some site visits to casinos such as the Galaxy Casino Hotel, the Macau Dome in CoTai (2005 East Asia Games Dome) and the Macau Stadium in Taipa (2005 East Asia Games Stadium). We were glad that the leading project manager and architect of those projects have provided us with vivid presentations and shared their insights.

We have also visited our distinguished alumni Mr. Paolo Cheang who was formerly the Macau Chief of the City Planning Department of Macau SARG has conducted an inspiring lecture on the planning history and latest development of Macau.

Other than the forward-looking development of Macau, a rich possession of cultural heritage as a meeting point of the East & the West in the last centuries has given the place a unique scenario. Therefore, the tour also covered a number of historic sites such as the Ruins of St. Paul's & Museum of Sacred Art, Monte Fort, A-ma Temple, Penha Church etc.

Having exposed to such a specialty study tour, the students and staff felt that the event was highly informative as well as perspective widening. We would like to thank our guests and alumni for their enthusiasm and hospitality.
