    Highlights

    The Department of Architecture of Chu Hai College of Higher Education presents the Symposium on "Cultural Heritage: Sustainability & Aesthetics", with co-organizer Antiquities & Monuments Office, Leisure and Cultural Services Department, on 22 July 2005. The Department has invited 6 distinguished guests from Singapore, Beijing, Taiwan and Hong Kong to share their views and experience on the above issues

  • How can the "Master Plan 2003" of Singapore safeguard and sustain the history and identity of the city?
  • While many Hong Kong people have begun treasuring "collective memory", what are the relationships among such memory, architectural conservation and urban development?
  • In the rapid developing Beijing, how many hutongs and traditional courtyard houses have survived?
  • How much do we know about the concepts behind Urban Renewal Authority?
  • How can we explore Chinese culture in Hong Kong through the study of its history?
  • What are the present situations of the Taiwan vernacular architecture

Aims of Symposium

  • To arouse public awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage.
  • To enhance academic interactions among scholars, practitioners and students from different institutes and regions regarding the sustainability and aesthetics issues in cultural heritage.

Focus and Scope of the Symposium

  • The Symposium will provide opportunity for exploration of new ideas and sharing of experience for the appreciation, conservation and revitalization of cultural heritage in different regions. Discussions on both theories and practices related to such theme, through presentation of cases, are encouraged.
  • Within this rather wide scope, this Symposium will focus on the cultural heritage with regard to the built environment, which relates to the aspects of architecture and urbanism.
