Good News:
Our New Campus in Castle Peak Bay - Designed
by Rem Koolhaas, OMA partner
March 2010
Further to the successful application of the Land Grant and Start-up
Loan from the Education Bureau and the Legislative Council of the
Hong Kong SAR Government in June 2009 to construct our purpose-built
new campus, the College is pleased to announce that the invited
design competition for the selection of the best design for the
new campus has been launched and completed in October and December
2009 respectively.
Locally and internationally renowned design teams, including Aedas
Ltd., MVRDV and AD+RG Ltd., NASCA and LD Asia, OMA and Leigh &
Orange Ltd., Ronald Lu and Partners (HK) Ltd., SANAA and P&T
Architects and Engineers Ltd., TR Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd. and
AGC Design Ltd. were shortlisted for the design submission invitation.
Each of the designs demonstrated a high architectural quality, a
reflection of the College's educational goal and unique identity
in Hong Kong.
The College selection committee chose the design by the team OMA
and Leigh & Orange Ltd. because it provided a strong visual
identity for the college, flexibility in use and an environment
conducive for multidisciplinary education. These fulfilled the College's
mission and vision. The team's concentrated and efficient design
housed the teaching spaces in two 'slabs' with the interactive spaces
as the 'mat' on the base. It also allowed several of the original
British army buildings on the Tuen Mun East Castle Peak Bay site
to be preserved and renovated for accommodation, student union and
canteen facilities.

The design was led by OMA partner Rem Koolhaas, General Manager
of OMA Asia (Hong Kong) David Gianotten and Leigh & Orange Ltd.
Managing Director Dominic Lam and Principal Director Vivien Tse.
Rem Koolhaas is a Prizker Prize winner and was one
of the founders of OMA, an international renowned design practice
which designed the CCTV of Beijing, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange
in China, Seattle Public Library in Seattle, and Illinois Institute
of Technology Student Complex in Chicago, USA to name a few. Currently
OMA Asia (Hong Kong) is making a Conceptual Plan for the West Kowloon
Cultural District in Hong Kong. Leigh & Orange Ltd has a history
of over 135 year in Hong Kong and was the architect for the award-winning
projects Science Park, Kadoori Biological Building for HKU, etc.
With the exciting design and the team's experience,
the College aims at starting the construction works in mid of 2010
with an expected completion and move-in date in the semester academic
year 2012-13.
