Visiting Water and Wastewater Treatment Works in Shenzhen

IAHR-HK and CIWEN jointly organized a technical visit to the Meilin Water Treatment Works and Luofang Wastewater Treatment Works on 17 November 2007. Meilin Water Treatment Works, with a design capacity of 600,000 cu m per day, was the biggest water and wastewater treatment facility in Shenzhen serving mainly the Futian area. The plant was established in 1994 and expanded in phases through to mid 2008. The plant was equipped with ozone oxidation, activated carbon, biological treatment and ozone disinfection technologies for achieving high water quality standards in terms of residual organic compounds and aesthetic requirements under the 2010 strategic planning scheme of Shenzhen City.

Luofang Wastewater Treatment Works, which serves 650,000 population, was one of important projects in Shenzhen in late 1990s. The plant was developed in two phases: phase I, comprised adsorption (biodegradation with a capacity of 10,000 t/day); and phase II, adopted triple oxidation ditch system with a capacity of 250,000 t/day. Treated effluent from the plant would comply with GB18918-2002 IB standards.

This technical visit provided an opportunity for students to have a better understanding of water and wastewater engineering, and environmental engineering.
