November 2009

Mr. Stan Lai, an Assistant Professor of our Department of Architecture visited Shantou University, China from 14 to 16 November 2009. Mr. Lai was invited by the Department of Art and Design, Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, Shantou University 汕 頭 大 學 長 江 藝 術 與 設 計 學 院 藝 術 設 計 系, for a 3-day visit including a guest lecture held in the school on 15 November.

The lecture was titled “From Chang’an to Leningrad, and then Hong Kong: 2 Studies on Film-Space by CHARCH 從 長 安 至 列 寧 格 勒 再 到 香 港 :珠 海 建 築 兩 項 電 影 空 間 的 研 究”. As the inter-disciplinary approach to architectural design and research is one of the emphases of our Department, it is believed that by studying film, also a multi-disciplinary art form, architectural students can be inspired from its different aspects, such as the setting-related art direction, frame composition, camera movement, editing, etc. The lecture demonstrated two ongoing student projects supervised by Mr. Lai which incorporate film as the medium of architectural study.

After the lecture, Mr. Lai also had a dialogue with the professors and students of Environmental Design, so as to continue the discussions on the issues of architecture, design and art. Then he visited different facilities of the department and the campus of the university. On the next day, accompanied by the faculty member of Shantou University, Mr. Lai also visited the Urban Planning Museum and other heritage sites of Shantou City, such as Shaogongyuan Colonnaded Building Streets, Tianhou Temple, etc.

During the 3-day visit, the two departments discussed on further mutual visits and interflowing programmes in future. We are delighted to receive the warmest welcome, hospitality and enthusiasm from Associate Professor Philip Fung, other staff, and students of Shantou University.
