Illustration of the suggested ideas in the charette

Initiated by the Hong Kong Architecture Centre (HKAC), 'Wan Chai New Market Design Charette' was a public architectural workshop sponsored by the Wan Chai District Council. Our Department was proud to be selected to be the executer of the project under the directorship of Prof. Paul CHU.

The future usage of the already-built basement of the Wan Chai New market was the centre of focus (the market was originally intended to house the relocated street vendors at the Cross Street and now the Government decided to preserve the culture of vendors at the street and hence no relocation will be necessary). The charette aimed at promoting public participation in the public space design process. Professional engineers, surveyors, architect and general public contributed ideas and suggestions through an interactive workshop in the Assembly Hall of St James Settlement in Wan Chai in November 2007.

The Department was responsible for conducting survey and interviews, organizing the charette and producing a professional report documenting the whole process and illustrating the suggested design by the public. The report was sent to Wan Chai District Council for further consideration after the press conference at the Hong Kong Institute of Architects premises in December 2007.
