Department of Civil Engineering
Programme Structure
Civil engineering is one of the oldest and broadest engineering
disciplines. The major disciplines covered in our civil engineering
programme are shown below. The courses in the Programme are grouped
into seven major subject domains, with the purpose of providing
students with different diversities of specialization. These subject
groups are:
- Structural Engineering and Mechanics
- Construction and Materials
- Water and Environmental Engineering
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Transportation Engineering
- Industrial Training and Projects
- Mathematics, Science and Engineering Fundamentals.
A wide variety of courses are organized under these subject groups
to provide systematic and progressive guidance for students to develop
different career prospects and further enhance their academic achievements.
Laboratory sessions are integrated into a number of courses in
the Programme to provide hands-on experience to students in dealing
with laboratory testing and to let students get insights into the
physical problems related to civil engineering.
There is also a Final Year Dissertation, which helps students consolidate
and apply their knowledge in real situations, acquire research skills
and develop their self-learning ability.
All the civil engineering courses together serve as a solid platform
for students to develop their civil engineering skills, preparing
them to pursue their future career goals or postgraduate education
and research.
