Department of Finance
The Programme is designed with a four-fold structure with different
course requirements as follows:
- College-wide Requirements (CR) - providing foundation
knowledge in humanities and social studies, in language and communication
skills and culture, in history, and physical education
- Faculty Requirements (FR) - emphasizing fundamental concepts
in business, management and mathematics for preparation of advanced
courses in the students' chosen field within the Faculty of Commerce
- Departmental Requirements (DR) - emphasizing more advanced
knowledge and concepts in accounting and banking
- Departmental Electives (DE) - allowing students to pursue
personal interest in specific areas of finance
- Elective Courses (EC) - including professional stream
and general business studies that are provided to allow free choices
across faculties and stream of specialisation.
The courses in the programme are grouped into seven major subject
groups, designed to provide students with a diversity of specialization.
The primary subject group is Finance, which itself has six sub-groups
of banking, financial management, investment management, technical
finance, sector finance, and topics in Greater China. The other
subject groups are: General Education, Business Studies, Management
Studies, Accounting, Law and Ethics, and Information Systems and
IT. The courses are organized under these subject groups to provide
systematic and progressive guidance for students to develop difference
career prospects and to further enhance their academic achievements.
Finance
This group has six sub-groups of banking, financial management,
investment management, technical finance, sector finance, and topics
in Greater China. Courses in banking and financial management
cover the necessary knowledge and skills that are required of contemporary
financial management. The investment management, technical
finance and sector finance groups offer the students
competence and comparative advantages in specific sectors of the
finance industry. The courses in topics in Greater China
prepare students for the growing demand and accordingly career opportunities
available in the region.
Accounting
This subject group provides students with a solid foundation
of the conceptual framework in accounting while Accounting for Management
and Control group focuses on the aspects of management, planning
and control through the analysis of financial data.
Law and Ethics
It mainly equips students with basic understanding of
the current regulatory framework and professional ethics in the
accounting and banking environment.
Business Studies
It includes a foundation core as well as specialised knowledge in
modern management skills.
Management Studies
It helps students to develop their professional knowledge
and managerial skills for their future career. This management group
consists of three disciplines: General Management, Human Resources
Management and Marketing Management. Students may specialise in
these functional areas according to their academic interests and
professional development.
Information Systems and IT
It provide students with knowledge in information systems related
to business, management and accounting applications.
There is also a Final Year Project, which helps students
consolidate and apply their knowledge in real situations, acquire
research skills and develop their self-learning ability.
