Department of Business Administration
The Programme is designed with a five-fold structure with different
course requirements as follows:
- College-wide Requirements (CR) -
providing foundation knowledge in humanities and social studies,
in language and communication skills, culture, history, and physical
education
- Faculty Requirements (FR)
- emphasizing fundamental concepts in economics, business, and
mathematics for the preparation of advanced courses in the students'
chosen field within the Faculty of Commerce
- Departmental Requirements (DR)
- emphasizing more advanced knowledge and concepts in Business
Administration and Management
- Departmental Electives (DE)
- providing choices for more specialized knowledge and concepts
within the Department, which include general business studies
and professional streams
- Elective Courses (EC) -
including all elective courses within the Faculty of Commerce
or free elective chosen across faculties.
The courses in the Programme are grouped into six major subject
domains, designed to provide students with different diversities
of specialization. These subject groups are:
- General Education,
- Business Studies,
- Management Studies,
- Accounting and Finance,
- Law and Ethics, and
- Information Systems and IT.
A wide variety of courses are organized under these subject groups
to provide a systematic and progressive guidance for students to
develop different career prospects and further enhance their academic
achievements.
- Courses in the Management Studies group
mainly help students to develop their professional knowledge and
managerial skills for their future career. This management group
consists of three disciplines including General Management, Human
Resources Management and Marketing Management. Students may specialise
in these disciplines according to their academic interests and
professional development.
- The Business Studies group
includes foundation courses as well as mathematics knowledge for
preparing students to advanced courses in business and management.
- In the Accounting and Finance subject
group, accounting courses provide students with a solid
foundation of the conceptual framework in accounting while the
finance and banking courses allow students to understand the financial
aspects of a business organization. Students will therefore be
able to interpret, analyses financial information which can assist
the business decision-making process.
- Law and Ethics
courses mainly introduce students to the importance of
business responsibility and how it affects the society. These
courses also equip students with the understanding of current
regulatory framework and professional ethics in management practices.
- The Information and IT group provides
students with the latest knowledge in IT for business applications.
Students will be equipped with the knowledge to employ IT to assist
in the management functions.
- There is also a Final Year Project,
which helps students consolidate and apply their knowledge in
real situations, acquire research skills and develop their self-learning
ability.
All these courses serve as a solid platform for students to develop
their business knowledge and skills, preparing them to pursue further
postgraduate education and research. The characteristics of the
subject groups can be summarized in the following sections.
