Programme Structure

The courses of the programme are structured into different types of requirements as follows:

  • College-wide required (CR) - providing fundamental knowledge in language and culture, history and physical education
  • Faculty required (FR) and Department required (DR) - emphasising fundamental concepts and advanced knowledge of social science, journalism and communication
  • Stream required (SR) - focusing on more advanced and professional knowledge for specialization in the chosen stream of media study
  • Electives (E) - enabling students to strengthen and further their expertise within their majors.

Courses in the Journalism and Communication programme are divided into seven major disciplines, which consist of general education, journalism core, communication core, print media stream, electronic media stream, Chinese contextual communication, and social science fundamentals.

The programme is conducted by intensive teaching merging theories and practical skills in journalism and communication. Students are given opportunities to practise in media organizations to get first-hand professional experience under the supervision of media professionals.

General education serves to enhance students' language proficiency and historical knowledge about China, aiming at strengthening the students¡¦ generic skills.

Students are trained with up-to-date theories of media in the courses of Journalism core and Communication core before they can develop specific professional expertise in print media or electronic media.

Social science fundamentals help students to relate mass media to society at large and encourage them to develop the ability to criticize media practice. Courses in this discipline are designed to prepare students for further postgraduate education and research.

Chinese contextual communication brings media practice within the context of Greater China that opens a career prospect for our graduates to work in the Chinese-speaking areas besides local employment opportunity.
