Course Descriptions

ENG 060 English Tutorial A,B
This two-term, elective course provides additional support for students who are studying ENG 100 or ENG 101. It integrates speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to provide individual as well as group support, enhancing students' communication skills, developing their ability to understand and to analyse texts and develop critical thinking skills, preparing them for advanced tertiary-level studies. This year will include a focus on vocabulary development and editing for grammatical accuracy.

ENG 100 Foundation English A,B
This two-term, College-required course provides communication practice in English for both majors and non-majors who have not achieved a pass at AS Level Use of English or whose English language abilities are weak. The course integrates speaking, listening, reading and writing so that students are given practice in expressing, understanding and responding to written and spoken information, opinions, feelings and ideas. Students placed in this level must pass Foundation English and also ENG 101.

ENG 101 Freshman English A,B
This two-term, College-required course provides a solid foundation in English for tertiary study, for both majors and non-majors. The course integrates speaking, listening, reading and writing skills so that students are given practice in understanding and using spoken English, writing clearly and accurately in a variety of styles, and understanding and using written texts.

ENG 139 Academic Writing & Study Skills A,B
This two-term, Departmental required course aims to help students by making them aware of different strategies they can use to study more successfully and more independently. It will include dictionary and library usage as well as written projects. The course aims to encourage critical thinking and analysis and will involve students in their own mini-research projects as well as practising writing essays, term papers, book reviews, articles and so on.

ENG 140 Pronunciation
This one-term, Departmental-required course helps students to recognize and reproduce all the sounds of English language, with their writing representations, using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to improve students' pronunciation by the practice of the sounds, rhythm and intonation of English.

ENG 141 The Discovery of Learning
Through the format of lectures and discussions on multi-disciplinary topics, with an open air where intellectual honesty is encouraged and treasured, students are led to discover the joy of learning: and through the process, gain insights into details of the lectured subjects, as well as the meaning of independent and critical thinking.

ENG 142 Modern American Literature
In this two-term elective course, a selection of modern American authors will be studied in order to consider common themes in novel writing, and to provide a greater understanding of American culture through research as well as close study of literary texts.

ENG 143 English Speaking Workshop A,B
This two term, College-required course provides opportunities for developing fluency through practice of speaking in small groups.

ENG 146 Creative Writing
This one-term elective course will use a discovery approach to look at the language used in literature and poetry, to promote consideration of the author's choice of words, style and format. Students will then create their own portfolios of poetry, articles, short stories and other styles of writing.

ENG 149 Improving Listening
This one-term elective course is suitable for students who have already studied English for a number of years but who need more opportunities in listening to the spoken language.

ENG 152 Oral Fluency
This one-term elective course is to improve spoken fluency by discussion and group work. Students will practice different examples of functional language to extend their range, vocabulary and conversational abilities, by covering some of the common phrases which are used as the 'building blocks' of conversation and incorporating these phrases into their spoken repertoire. Different aspects of building a conversation in English will be covered in each session, ranging from introductory gambits, through interruptions and checking to closing a conversation.

ENG 156 Short Stories in English
English short story writers from a wide time-span will be covered on this one-term, Departmental-required course in order to look at the development of the short story as an art form, as well as examining current trends in writing.

ENG 158 Introduction to American Literature
The short story as a genre will be considered by looking at a range of American short story writers from different periods, in this two-term, Departmental-required course.

ENG 159 Introduction to Theoretical Linguistics
This one-term Departmental-required course introduces students to the central components of theoretical linguistics. Students will have an overview of the properties of language and the various fields of linguistics, which include the studies of sounds and the sound system (phonetics and phonology), words and word formation (morphology), sentence patterns (syntax) and meaning (semantics).

ENG 160 English Tutorial Year One A,B
This two-term, Departmental-required course is part of a series which integrates speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to provide individual as well as group support, enhancing students' communication skills, developing their ability to understand and to analyse texts and develop critical thinking skills, preparing them for advanced tertiary-level essay and research writing and oral presentations. This year will include a focus on editing for grammatical accuracy.

ENG 161 Grammar & Lexis
This one-term Departmental-required course uses the lexical approach, studying grammar and vocabulary without isolating it from the text in which it is embedded.

ENG 162 Short Story Translation
This one-term elective course provides practical training in the translation of British and American short stories, including works by Somerset Maugham, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, O.Henry and Ernest Hemingway.

ENG 236 Translation A,B
This one-term, elective course provides practical experience of translation between English and Chinese, using various different types of text.

ENG 237 Developing Grammar A,B
This two-term, Departmental-required course aims to give students extensive exposure to English grammar by the study of practical written and spoken examples. Students will give presentation on different aspects of English Grammar and learn how to use grammar reference books to check their own written work more efficiently.

ENG 241 Introduction to Drama
Students will work together to perform and produce a play in order to develop their speaking skills and ability to work co-operatively in this one-term, elective course.

ENG 242 Modern Literature in English A,B
In this two-term, Departmental-required course a selection of 20th and 21st century authors writing in English will be studied in order to examine current trends in writing.

ENG 245 English in the Liberal Arts
This one-term, elective course will take a brief and overall look at history, art, music, philosophy, and religion. There will be an assignment for each of these topics.

ENG 247 English in the Media
Students will analyse newspaper articles to improve their written work as well as their reading abilities in this one-term, elective course.

ENG 248 Oral Presentation Skills
This one-term, Departmental-required course is suitable for students who need to speak English in connection with their academic work and to give more confidence in public speaking. It is intended to encourage students to think, communicate and solve problems in English.

ENG 249 Creative and Critical Thinking
This one-term, elective course aims to encourage creative and critical thinking and to develop oral, written and mental fluency by discussion of different approaches to thinking, philosophy and psychology.

ENG 250 American Women Writers
In this one-term, Departmental-required course we will look at novels by women, in order to illustrate changing customs, attitudes, roles and the relationship between the sexes.

ENG 251 Cultural Theory and Criticism
This one-term, elective course is to introduce a number of popular contemporary cultural and literary theories and examine how they can be employed to criticize cultural texts. Products of various media will be selected as the subjects of criticism.

ENG 252 Introduction to Applied Linguistics
This one-term Departmental-required course explores the central components of applied linguistics. Issues about first language acquisition, second language acquisition and bilingualism, as well as sociolinguistics, will be covered. The course enables students to reflect on their linguistic experience with some sensitivity.

ENG 253 Written Communication Skills
This one-term, Departmental-required course will look at barriers to successful communication and how we can avoid them by writing with a clear aim, and with the readers in mind. Various forms of formal and informal written communication will be practiced, suitable both for the academic and business worlds.

ENG 254 Applied Linguistics: Second Language Acquisition
This one-term, elective course focuses on the development and processes underlying the acquisition of English as a second language. Learning a language involves learning a complex set of phonological, syntactic and semantic rules of grammar. Topics include theories of second language acquisition and cross-linguistic influence. Students will gain a solid understanding of the issues and methods adopted in current research.

This two-term, Departmental-required course is part of a series which integrates speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to provide individual as well as group support, enhancing students' language and communication skills, developing their awareness of literature, cross-cultural studies and the liberal arts. This year will include a focus on accurate and extensive writing.

This two-term, Departmental-required course reviews the development of the novel as a literary form in English writing, as well as involving students in research on the writers and their topics

ENG 347 Argument & Debate
This one-term, elective course is to develop spoken English for work and study in an English-speaking environment by focusing on the practicalities of presenting a line of thought, developing an argument and taking part in a debate.

ENG 348 Modern Colloquial English
This one-term, Departmental required course will concentrate on the way that idioms and phrasal verbs are used in modern English as well as providing students with listening and speaking practice using colloquialisms.

ENG 349 Commercial Translation
This one-term, elective course offers practical training in the translation of commercial documents including contracts, business correspondence, bills and invoices and trading documents.

ENG 353 Creative Drama
Students will help to write and produce a drama or dramas for performance in this one-term, elective course. Techniques such as improvisation, mime, use of gestures, pantomime and dance will be looked at for their audience-involvement possibilities.

ENG 354 American Literature A,B
Students will combine close textual study with research into the social and historical background of writers, their times and their topics in order to gain a wider perspective on the concerns of American literature, in this two-term, Departmental required course.

ENG 356 Theoretical Linguistics: Syntax
This one-term elective course introduces some fundamental concepts in the study of syntax, the rules governing formation of phrases and sentences, and how syntactic rules are universal. These concepts will be introduced through grammatical structures accessible to the students, ranging from simple to complex constituents.

ENG 358 Applied Linguistics: Discourse Analysis
This one-term Departmental-required course provides students with an opportunity to analyse actual sequences of talk and texts, and to identify both sytematicity and variety in patterns or routines of talk/thought across different genres. A range of key notions, such as structure and function, cohesion and coherence, relevance, text and context, discourse and communication, and writing and speech will be discussed.

ENG 360 English Tutorial Year Three A,B
This two-term, Departmental-required course is part of a series which integrates speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to provide individual as well as group support, enhancing students' language and communication skills, developing their awareness of literature, cross-cultural studies and the liberal arts. This year will include a focus on widening students' vocabulary.

This is a two-term, elective course introducing elementary level French. Students will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as increasing their awareness of French culture.

ENG 365 English Literature: Women Writers
This one-term, Departmental-required course looks at novels by women writing in English, in order to consider changing roles, customs, attitudes, and the relationship between the sexes.

ENG 441 Senior Thesis
This is a one-term, Departmental-required, independent study course in which students work with an advisor to produce a thesis of no less than 3,500 words. Topics may range from literary studies to research, translation or the writing of a novel.

ENG 448 English Literature: Shakespeare
In this one-term, Departmental-required course, students will sample some of the poetry and plays of Shakespeare, research the period in which he lived and compare different productions of his dramas to find out why his writing has been so influential.

Eng 451 Contemporary Writing
This one-term, elective course trains students to produce clear and readable English by practicing and comparing different types of expression in a written form, so that students can build up a portfolio of examples such as reviews, poetry, fiction.

This one-term, Departmental-required course is designed to prepare students who hope to study abroad, or wish to test their listening skills, improve their vocabulary and their grammar by covering the IELTS examination requirements.

Literature (in its widest sense) from different countries but covering similar themes will be studied in this one-term, elective course in order to give an insight into different cultures.

This one-term, elective course offers an examination of film as a literary genre and its impact on our perception of narrative, our use of language and our daily lives.

In this one-term, elective course we will look at the ways in which gender stereotypes and roles affect our lives in many areas such as literature, education, language, behaviour and perception.

ENG 459 Theoretical Linguistics: Semantics
This one-term Departmental-required course explores how meaning is systematically coded in the grammar of natural languages through semantic analysis at the word, sentences and utterance levels. Basic concepts such as sense and reference, lexical semantics, truth functionality in conjunction, disjunction, implication and contradiction, as well as events and entities will be included.

This one-term, elective course extends students' lexical range and spoken compensation strategies for more fluent interaction to prepare students for possible postgraduate study abroad.

ENG 465 Poetry in English
This course examines the elements of poetry in a diverse range of poetic works in English. Students then develop a research project on the works of a single poet or on a particular theme. A creative writing component will also be incorporated to give the students a taste of the craft of writing poetry.
