European Conference and Lecturing Tour
Professor Y. Y. Kueh, Dean of Faculty of Commerce
was recently invited by the Department of Financial and Management
Studies of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University
of London to present a keynote paper on 'Mao and Agriculture
in China's Industrialization' at an international conference jointly
sponsored by The British Academy and The China Quarterly to mark
the 50th Anniversary of Chairman Mao's famous speech 'On Problems
of Agricultural Cooperativization' in London, 21-23 June 2005. In
the paper (which will be published in a forthcoming issue of The
China Quarterly), Professor Kueh examines the long-term impact of
the drastic institutional changes initiated by Chairman Mao in July
1955 on economic and social development in China over the past 50
years.
Following the London Conference Professor Kueh was invited by the
Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, University
of Duisburg-Essen, Germany as Visiting Professor to give a series
of lectures on China's economic reforms, industrial development,
and manufacturing exports and impact on the Asia Pacific economies,
in Duisburg , 24-30 June 2005.
Exchange Programme with University of Duisburg-Essen,
Germany
During his visit in Germany in June, Professor Kueh also represented
the College to sign a five-year student exchange agreement with
the Mercator School of Management (MSM) of the University of Duisburg-Essen
commencing July 2005. The agreement provides for mutual tuition
waiver between the Duisburg Campus and Chu Hai College of Higher
Education for students qualified to be enrolled in the respective
undergraduate programmes on a 'visiting student' basis. Under the
agreement, selected junior and senior students from the Faculty
of Commerce will also be given priority enrolment in the MSM's popular
BEST (Business and Economics Summer Term) Programme, which is taught
in English and includes a German language component.
